> The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has released guidance regarding the management of surplus personal protective equipment (PPE) in England following the COVID-19 pandemic. Having distributed over 19.1 billion items to frontline staff, the government is now addressing the challenge of excess inventory that remains post-vaccine rollout. The primary issues identified are the high taxpayer costs associated with storing surplus stock and the risk of items expiring before use. To mitigate these concerns, the DHSC is operating under the waste management hierarchy framework to prioritize the efficient use of resources and reduce waste. As part of a multi-faceted approach involving international donations and recycling, the DHSC is now piloting a program to sell excess PPE directly to the commercial market. The required action for interested parties and potential buyers is to access the department's approved auction site to view live listings or contact the support team at ppesalesenquires@dhsc.gov.uk. All sales are subject to specific terms, conditions, and minimum order levels as defined by the DHSC. This initiative represents a strategic effort to recover value from surplus supplies while reducing the environmental and financial impact of long-term storage.
