Your Product Didn't Come With a Manual. Now It Does.

Inspired by Xia Huang, Ph.D., Project Manager at DEKRA, speaking at the 2026 ISPE AI in Life Sciences Summit, Boston

At the ISPE AI in Life Sciences Summit in Boston, June 22 and 23, there were a number of conversations that went beyond the classic, "here is an AI use case I want to market". I found the device orientated talk that Xia Huang, Ph.D. said, to be one of those.

"Giving birth to a baby is kind of like developing a new product."

As much as this was a charming remark following his words on this past Fathers Day and caught a well deserved laugh from me and the audience, he wasn't trying to be cute. He was making a serious point about post-market responsibility for AI-enabled devices. This grabbed my attention.

Labor is the easy part.

You hold ultimate responsibility for your product. Not the regulator. Not the standard-setter. You. Even without harmonized frameworks, you proactively monitor. That is your obligation.

The same way a parent thinks… you don't wait for your kid to get hurt before you start paying attention.

I've heard my mom say it plenty of times.
