FDA 483 - Jay Egg - April 12, 2011

On April 11-12, 2011, the FDA inspected Jay Egg, a shell egg producer located at 4601 N 150 E, Portland, IN 47371. The inspection was conducted by Investigators James A. Lane, Daniel J. Gorski, and Joseph R. Strelnik, and the report was issued to Robert Bixler, President.

Two observations were noted:

1. **Failure to maintain records documenting compliance with biosecurity measures:** The firm's "Salmonella Enteritidis Prevention Plan" (last updated 04/08/2011) requires documentation of cleaning and disinfection for company equipment used between layer houses. However, there was no documentation of cleaning and disinfection for the skid steer loader used for manure removal across the North and South chicken houses.

2. **Failure to prevent stray animals from entering poultry houses:** A live pigeon was observed inside the North House, having entered through bird netting on the eaves. The netting provided only partial coverage, leaving an approximately one-inch opening extending the length of the house.
