China NMPA Product Recall - Modular total knee system (brand name: Vanguard SSK)

The National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) issued a report on September 9, 2016, detailing a voluntary recall initiated by Biomet Orthopedics for its Modular Total Knee System, specifically the Vanguard SSK. The recall was prompted by a potential discrepancy in a specific batch of VANGUARD distal femoral pads, where the product contents might not accurately match the English label. Biomet Orthopedics, with Bangmei (Shanghai) Trading Co., Ltd. as its distributor and Zimmerbiomet (Shanghai) Trading Co., Ltd. as its responsible unit in China, took action after identifying this labeling inconsistency. Crucially, the NMPA confirmed that none of the affected products were sold or imported into the Chinese market. Therefore, no direct corrective actions were required within China, as the recall primarily impacted regions such as the USA, Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Canada. Despite no domestic sales, the NMPA mandated that local food and drug administrations enhance their supervision and management of such medical devices.
