China NMPA Product Recall - Inverted shoulder joint system

The National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) issued a document on February 21, 2017, concerning a global voluntary recall initiated by Biomet Orthopedics for its Inverted Shoulder Joint System (Registration No.: 20163461824). The recall, formally reported on January 17, 2017, addresses a potentially higher-than-expected crushing rate in titanium alloy humeral support components manufactured before September 2011. While the recall is global, Zimmer Medical (Shanghai) International Trading Co., Ltd., the responsible unit in China, confirmed that the specific affected batches were not sold in China, and no related complaints have been received domestically. In response to the issue, Biomet Orthopedics has redesigned all products manufactured after September 2011 to enhance component strength. Under the NMPA's regulatory framework for medical devices, provincial food and drug administrations were instructed to strengthen their oversight and management of similar products.
