China NMPA Product Recall - Knee joint surgical tools

Biomet UK Limited, a manufacturer of knee surgery tools, initiated a voluntary global recall due to a potential defect in certain batches. The issue, identified on January 10, 2017, involved the presence of alumina in the raw materials of specific knee joint surgical tools, which could lead to product breakage. These instruments are utilized in orthopedic surgery for measurements, positioning, guidance, and tissue protection. The National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) in China published this recall notice on February 21, 2017, acknowledging the action taken by Biomet UK Limited. Zimmer Medical (Shanghai) International Trading Co., Ltd., the responsible unit in China, confirmed that the affected batches of tools (registration number: "国械备20160498号") were not sold within the Chinese market, and consequently, no related complaints have been reported in China. As a result, no specific corrective actions were required within China from the manufacturer or distributor for these particular recalled units. However, the NMPA requested all provincial, autonomous region, and municipal food and drug administration departments to enhance their supervision and management over similar medical devices to ensure product safety and compliance. This proactive measure by Biomet UK Limited reflects a commitment to product quality and patient safety, even in regions where the affected products were not distributed.
