China NMPA Product Recall - Knee joint surgical tools

The National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) issued a recall notice on February 21, 2017, regarding knee surgery tools manufactured by Biomet UK Limited. Zimmer Medical (Shanghai) International Trading Co., Ltd., the responsible unit in China, reported the voluntary global recall initiated by the manufacturer. The core issue was the potential presence of alumina in the raw materials of certain knee joint surgical instrument batches, which carried a risk of product breakage. These tools, registered under 国械备20160498号, are utilized in orthopedic surgery for measurements, positioning, guidance, and tissue protection. Biomet UK Limited initiated this recall globally due to the material defect. Crucially, the company confirmed that the specific affected batches were never sold or distributed within China. Therefore, no related complaints or adverse events were reported in China, and no specific corrective actions were required for the Chinese market. Nevertheless, the NMPA mandated that provincial and municipal food and drug administration departments strengthen their supervision and management of similar medical devices to maintain product safety standards.
