China NMPA Product Recall - Knee joint surgical tools

On February 22, 2017, the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) announced a voluntary global recall initiated by Biomet UK Limited for specific batches of knee surgical instruments. The recall, reported on January 10, 2017, stemmed from a critical issue: the presence of alumina in the raw materials, posing a risk of product breakage. Zimmer Medical (Shanghai) International Trading Co., Ltd., the manufacturer's designated responsible entity in China, conveyed this information.Biomet UK Limited confirmed that the affected batches of these knee joint surgical tools, used for measurement, positioning, and tissue protection in orthopedic surgery, were not sold or distributed within the Chinese market. As a result, no product-related complaints were received in China, and direct corrective actions within the country were not necessary. Nevertheless, under its regulatory framework, the NMPA mandated that all provincial and municipal food and drug administration departments enhance their supervision and management over similar medical products. This proactive measure ensures public health and safety by maintaining vigilance over medical devices, regardless of their direct market presence. The recall covered various models, including orthopedic positioning pieces and trial moldings.
