China NMPA Product Recall - Unicompartmental knee joint system components

The National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) announced a voluntary global recall by Biomet UK LTD., published on June 4, 2017, for its Oxford unicompartment, uncemented tibial component. Distributed in China by Zimmer Medical (Shanghai) International Medical Trading Co., Ltd., this recall was initiated due to reports of patients experiencing tibial plateau fractures. An investigation identified that approximately 0.12% of patients worldwide experienced these fractures. The core issue was not a manufacturing defect, but rather the critical importance of specific surgical techniques to minimize the risk of tibial plateau fractures, as highlighted by complaint analysis. Despite the global recall, Biomet UK LTD. confirmed that none of the affected product batches were sold or imported into China, resulting in no recorded adverse events or domestic complaints in the region. As a required action under the NMPA framework, Biomet UK LTD. is implementing field safety notification measures to re-emphasize adherence to proper surgical techniques and the product's instructions for use. Furthermore, the NMPA has instructed provincial regulatory bodies to strengthen their oversight of similar medical devices.
