China NMPA Product Recall - Distal locking screw locator for intramedullary nail (Sureshot humeral nail AO interface drill bit)

On July 15, 2015, Smith & Nephew Medical Products International Trading (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., the responsible unit in China for Smith & Nephew, Inc., initiated a voluntary Level III recall of its Intramedullary Nail Distal Locking Screw Positioner. This recall, overseen by the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA), was prompted by manufacturing errors affecting the product's drill bits. Specifically, the issue could prevent the drill bits from fully penetrating bone during surgery, potentially compromising the effectiveness of intramedullary nail implantation, which is a procedure for long bone fractures where the device assists in guiding screw placement. As part of the corrective actions, Smith & Nephew's Quality Department drafted recall notices, which were then disseminated to affected distributors and subsequently to hospitals. The company's Supply Chain Department was tasked with retrieving all affected products, including specific models like 71,691,155, from distributors to their Shanghai warehouse, before returning them to the US manufacturing plant for processing. Replacement products were provided to compensate for the recalled units. This proactive measure aimed to mitigate potential risks to patient safety and ensure the reliability of surgical instruments.
