China NMPA Product Recall - Bone screws

On February 26, 2014, the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) published a recall notice regarding bone screws manufactured by Synthes GmbH. The recall, initiated on February 10, 2014, stemmed from a critical issue of incorrect product numbering. Specifically, bone screws from batch 214.844 were erroneously laser-marked with product number 214.846. Additionally, there was a concern that related batches, 214.846 and 214.846S, might also have been similarly mislabeled as 214.844 due to their concurrent production. Johnson & Johnson (Shanghai) Medical Devices Co., Ltd., the distributor in China, reported this global recall to the NMPA. The recall involved several countries including France, Denmark, and the UK. However, the company confirmed that no products from the affected batches were imported into China. Consequently, Johnson & Johnson (Shanghai) stated that no further corrective actions, investigations, or reports would be undertaken in China beyond the initial notification. Under the NMPA's regulatory oversight, provincial food and drug administrations were instructed to strengthen their supervision and management of similar medical devices to ensure continued product integrity.
