China NMPA Product Recall - Hip prosthesis-bone-metal composite acetabulum

On March 31, 2014, Zimmer (Shanghai) Medical International Trading Co., Ltd. reported a voluntary global recall to the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA). This recall concerned a specific medical device, the 60 Trabecular Metal acetabular shell, manufactured by Zimmer Inc. The primary issue prompting this action was a critical manufacturing defect: a missing locking ring in a particular batch (Lot Number 62490588, Product Number 00-6202-060-22) of these hip prosthesis components, rendering them unsuitable for surgical use. Although Zimmer Inc. initiated the recall globally, the company confirmed that no affected products from this specific batch were sold or imported into China. The recall was managed under the NMPA's regulatory framework, referencing the product's registration certificate, CFDA (Imported) 2011 No. 3462304. As a required action, affected products were to be returned to Zimmer Inc., and the NMPA requested that all local food and drug administrations strengthen their oversight and management of similar medical devices to ensure ongoing product safety.
