China NMPA Product Recall - Metal intramedullary nail surgical instruments

Zimmer Medical (Shanghai) International Trading Co., Ltd., acting for manufacturer Zimmer Inc., initiated a voluntary Class II recall of specific metal intramedullary nail surgical instruments. The recall, reported to the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) on May 29, 2017, per NMPA (Imported) No. 20131105023, addresses a potential raw material anomaly in 4.3mm drill bits (model 00-2490-075-434.3mm). This defect could increase the risk of product breakage, impacting devices intended for temporary internal fixation in limb fractures. Although the recall is global, no adverse events or complaints were recorded in China. Proactively, all seven affected units imported into China, which were unsold, have been successfully returned to the manufacturer, Zimmer Inc. This action ensures product safety and compliance with NMPA regulations, effectively preventing any distribution of the potentially faulty instruments within the domestic market.
