Zimmer Inc., in collaboration with its distributor Zimmer (Shanghai) Medical International Trading Co., Ltd., executed a voluntary Class II recall of specific metal intramedullary nail surgical instruments. This action, reported to the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) on May 29, 2017, and officially published on July 4, 2017, stemmed from the discovery of potential raw material abnormalities during internal testing. Investigations confirmed that these anomalies, particularly affecting 4.3mm drill bits (e.g., model 00-2490-075-434.3mm), could elevate the risk of instrument breakage. These devices are intended for temporary internal fixation in limb fracture cases. The recall encompassed specific product batches globally, including those distributed in China. All identified affected products within China have been successfully returned to the manufacturer, Zimmer Inc. Notably, no adverse events or related complaints were recorded domestically in China concerning these products, highlighting the proactive nature of Zimmer's response to maintain product safety and regulatory compliance.
