Baxter International Inc. – FDA Warning Letter, Apr 2, 2026
The FDA issued a warning letter to Baxter International Inc. following an inspection of its Round Lake, Illinois, facility from March 23 to April 2, 2026. The inspection revealed significant violations of Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulations, rendering the firm"s drug products adulterated under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. A primary concern was the facility"s failure to maintain adequate separation between cephalosporin production and other drug manufacturing areas, leading to documented cross-contamination. Furthermore, the FDA identified serious deficiencies in Baxter"s aseptic processing, including improperly validated sterilization methods and inadequate environmental monitoring. The company"s visual inspection program also failed to reliably detect particulates in injectable drugs, resulting in a voluntary recall of contaminated products. Investigators also noted a pattern of insufficient investigations into critical failures, such as leaking containers and sterility test positives. Because similar issues have occurred at other Baxter sites, the FDA emphasized a lack of effective corporate management oversight. To rectify these issues, Baxter is required to engage an independent consultant to perform a comprehensive audit of its operations. The company must submit detailed remediation plans, conduct independent risk assessments of its contamination controls and manufacturing processes, and provide evidence that its Quality Unit has been granted sufficient authority and resources to ensure product safety. Failure to address these violations may result in legal action, including product seizures or the withholding of new drug approvals.
