An FDA inspection was conducted at Kanza Cooperative Association, also known as Iuka Feeds, on October 24, 2017. The inspection, focusing on Part 507 Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMP) for animal food and Preventive Controls, revealed several compliance concerns. The primary official violation noted on an FDA Form 483 was the failure to adequately flush the mixer between batches of medicated feeds, specifically following a CTC/LAS batch with a MON batch without proper cleaning or record. This practice risks cross-contamination of animal food, violating regulations requiring precautions to prevent contamination. Beyond the formal observation, inspectors discussed additional conditions requiring attention. These included significant material buildup on the mixer shaft and hand add grates, indicating insufficient cleaning practices. Environmental control issues were evident with pigeons, feathers, and feces found in the north receiving bay, exacerbated by structural defects like holes, cracks, and broken windows that allowed pest entry. Furthermore, poor housekeeping practices were observed, such as mixed material piles near receiving pits, posing contamination risks, and adulterated grain products near loadout bays. Management acknowledged these issues and committed to addressing them, including cleaning equipment, repairing structural deficiencies to prevent pest access, and disposing of contaminated materials. The company was also in the process of developing recall procedures and other Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) required Standard Operating Procedures. The inspection highlights the need for robust sanitation, pest control, and cross-contamination prevention protocols to ensure animal feed safety.
