On April 30, 2026, the FDA issued a warning letter to Best Buy Bones, Inc. regarding significant safety violations at its Mount Morris, Michigan, facility. The letter follows an inspection conducted from September 8 to September 12, 2025, which revealed that the company’s manufacturing processes failed to meet federal standards for animal food safety under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act and specific preventive control regulations (21 CFR Part 507). A major finding included the presence of Salmonella Uganda in a lot of pet chews, which prompted a voluntary recall. The FDA identified several critical issues, including the failure to verify that suppliers adequately control biological hazards and the failure to follow established cooking times and temperatures necessary to kill bacteria. Investigators also observed poor sanitation practices, such as incorrect sanitizer concentrations and an instance where an employee placed pet treats back into retail packaging after they had fallen on the floor. Furthermore, the company lacked the required documentation to prove that safety monitoring and corrective actions were consistently performed. Best Buy Bones must notify the FDA in writing within 15 working days of the specific steps taken to correct these violations and prevent their recurrence. The response must include supporting evidence, such as updated safety plans and training logs. Failure to comply may lead to legal action, including product seizures or injunctions.
