The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning letter to South Asian Food Inc. following an inspection of its Maspeth, New York facility conducted between March 2 and March 9, 2026. The inspection revealed that the company failed to comply with the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act and specific seafood safety regulations known as Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) standards. A primary concern was the company"s failure to implement verification procedures for imported vacuum-packed seafood, such as dried anchovies and shrimp. These products carry a risk of botulism, yet the company lacked documentation proving the foreign suppliers controlled this hazard. Additionally, these items were stored at room temperature despite contradictory label instructions and a lack of safety assurances. The FDA also documented serious sanitation failures, including the presence of a cat, cat food, and a litter box with waste inside the food warehouse. Furthermore, exterior doors were left open without adequate barriers to prevent the entry of rodents and other pests. The FDA has classified the company"s products as unsafe for consumption due to these unsanitary conditions. South Asian Food Inc. is required to respond in writing within 15 working days to outline specific corrective actions taken to address these violations and prevent their recurrence. Failure to comply may lead to legal consequences, including the seizure of products or the refusal of future imports.
